Cures for Snoring

Snoring is caused by excess throat and nasal tissue that is more prone to vibrate during times of abnormal breathing, and finding cures for snoring is not always easy. Snoring happens when air cannot flow freely through the nose and mouth during sleep. The airway becomes narrow from poor sleep position or throat soft tissue abnormalities. The tongue can also restrict a natural flow of breathing causing the excess tissue to vibrate and often sound like a chain saw ready to take off into outer space.

Snoring is an extreme annoyance for those who are awakened or kept awake by the noise. Some people actually wake themselves up when snoring and after repositioning their body will often fall back to sleep blissfully quiet. There are a number cures for snoring out and about that people use with varying degrees of success.

There are a number of reasons people snore including age, sinus and nasal problems, being out of shape and overweight, smoking and alcohol and medication intake, sleep position and the way an individual is built. As people reach middle age, muscle tone in the throat decreases, and the throat becomes narrower. Airways that are blocked make breathing more difficult, and it creates a vacuum in the throat that often leads to snoring. Being out of shape with excess fatty tissue and poor muscle tone will cause the sleeper to snore up a storm. Certain medications, alcohol consumption can cause the muscles to relax too much and become a breathing speed bump. Lying flat on the back cause the mouth and throat tissue to relax and combined with the position of the tongue blocking the natural flow of air will cause someone to snore.

Cures for snoring affect different people in different ways, and there is no one snore cure all. People often try many cures for snoring before they find something that at least minimizes snoring. An elbow shot to the ribs has been known to stop snoring, but combat during the resting and sleeping hours is not always conducive to a healthy night’s sleep.

There are some self help cures for snoring that may help the snorer be a more peaceful and quieter sleeper. Exercise and weight loss will help tone up the body muscles, including the muscles in the throat. Smoking irritates the membranes in the mouth and stopping the nicotine habit will help those mouth membranes to be less irritated. Sedative, sleeping pills and alcohol before bedtime cause the mouth muscles to relax a little too much and restrict breathing. The question becomes, “when do I take a sedative or sleeping pill, if not before bed time?” Maybe the answer is to stop the sleeping pills and sedatives and instead exercise more.

There are other things that can be done when searching for cures for snoring. Keep the bedroom air moist. Dry air can often irritate the mouth and throat membranes which can bring on a snoring attack. Sleeping with multiple pillows to keep the head elevated will often times ease breathing by making your jaw fall forward slightly.
